The easternmost village in Spain, Cadaquès has stood up to the sea for centuries, its back to the Pyrenees. Isolated for a long time from the remainder of the Costa Brava, Cadaquès has preserved a typical charm, a character specific to this village where property could only be expressed in respect for pure Spanish tradition.
Cadaquès knew how to benefit from this isolation which only ceased in the twentieth century : conservation of the natural and building heritage, important cultural development thanks to the arrival of Salvador Dali. Many writers, painters or sculptors could not resist the attraction of Cadaquès. The image of the Costa Brava, its white houses surrounding the Church of Santa Maria, the mountains rearing up into a sky as deep as the sea, fascinated the artists as today they fascinate the visitors.
To live in Cadaquès, is a little like looking through the eyes of Dali, Picasso, Matisse, the pen of Garcia Lorca and so many others.
Dominated by the Church of Santa Maria, of late Gothic architecture, Cadaquès goes down towards the port from square to square : the square of Rahola, the square of General Escofet. Your steps will then lead you to the house of Dali, nestling in dreamlike surroundings, then towards the natural port of Portlligat.
Creeks with crystalline water, exceptional flora and fauna, a place of history and culture...
The visit to the Church of Santa Maria, the port and the house of Salvador Dali is not all that Cadaquès offers. Alternation of Gothic and Art Nouveau (see for example the Serinyena house), the city has a museum of Arts and the Perrot-Moore museum.
Cultural week, festival of the virgin, international music festival ... a great number of events take place throughout the year.
The largest natural port in Catalonia, Cadaquès is one of the most famous villages of the Costa Brava, both for its days and its lively nights.
As regards sports, Castelló d' Empúries obtained the 'sporting tourist destination' label decreed by the government of Catalonia. Parachuting, water sports, fishing in the open sea, golf... just some possibilities which are offered to visitors to the Costa Brava.
In Cadaquès, many restaurants of quality will invite you to taste the very soul of the Costa Brava. Many wines which caused the development of Cadaquès, but also paellas, suquets, seafood zarzuela... some of the regional delights which will make your stay so memorable.
